Saving water (& plastic & money) whilst travelling

One of the most annoying things about travelling is trying not to be so wasteful, especially when it comes to single use plastics. Buying bottled water in different countries is one of my biggest pet peeves. I would never go near a plastic water bottle at home, but feel forced to look in that direction for clean drinking water in other countries.

Having my Chilly Bottle with me does have benefits, a lot of airports now have refill stations and in most places hostels encourage using less plastic by having a water refill tank or a filtered water station. And if you’re like me I need a bottle of water with me at all times…

I don’t know how I’ve only just discovered this, but the best way to save water, plastic waste AND MONEY is to invest in a water bottle that filters or purifies the water so you can drink it from anywhere!

There are loaaaads of brands now that do filtered water bottles, or filters that you can buy to put in an existing bottle. Some brands I like are Klean Kanteen, Chilly Bottle and SIGG which are all BPA free. You can then get a Lifestraw Universal Kit to purify the water that these are filled with.

Alternatively there is the option of buying a bottle already fitted with a filter. I’ve only ever used the Bobble brand but Lifestraw also do their own bottle plus filter. Have a little read about some of the best bottles here.

I wish I’d known about this sooner, but at least I know now! And that’s why I’m writing this post, incase you didn’t either (you’re welcome)

It’s great to see so many options now for reducing plastic consumption and waste, also a massive thank you to all the hostels that offer free drinking water and refill stations, saving tired, dehydrated and stressed travellers one station at a time.

STAY HYDRATED
